The EYFS statutory framework sets the minimum standards for care and education in early years and childcare settings for children from birth to the end of reception. Its implementation is closely monitored by the DfE to ensure that:
- Children's safety and well-being is central to all that we do,
- Children receive care and support that meets their individual needs,
- Children are supported to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours that enable them to navigate life with success,
- The EYFS remains fit for purpose.
In summer 2024, the DfE launched a consultation which sought the sector’s views on proposals to strengthen the safeguarding requirements in the EYFS. The consultation has now concluded, and the document the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage safeguarding reforms: Government consultation response’ summarises the sector’s feedback and provides advanced notice of the new legal requirements set to take effect from 1st September 2025.
